For the people who know me, it might come as a surprise to learn I am dedicating the next year of my life to serve the people of Haiti. To be quite honest, I am just as surprised to hear myself say it. This opportunity has presented itself in such a short amount of time, but after much prayer and consideration, I am confident in saying in January 2013, I will move to Haiti to serve as the Aquaponic Intern at Grace Village.
Aqua-what?! Don’t worry, I asked myself the same question in early October 2012. That’s when a friend pointed me to the Healing Haiti webpage and told me about the organizations vision to feed their orphanage, and members of the surrounding community with food grown sustainably. Because Haiti has a limited amount of land to farm, Healing Haiti has turned to other technologies to grow crops. In aquaponics, you grow fish and plants together in one integrated, soilless system. The fish waste provides a food source for the plants and the plants provide a natural filter for the water the fish live in. I was extremely interested to learn more about the aquaponic internship, so shortly after contacting Healing Haiti, I found myself traveling to Grace Village in early November to learn about it firsthand.

Although I am new to aquaponics, God has given me so many gifts to prepare me for this adventure such as time, education, and support from my family and friends. With these gifts and continued prayer, I will be supporting a struggling community and allowing them to provide for themselves the most basic of necessities: food.
As excited as I am to serve in Haiti, there are financial burdens to support my mission since I will not receive an income for my services. Any support you can give me, whether through prayer or financial contributions, would be greatly appreciated. You can be assured that whatever blessing you provide for me, it will flow right through me to the people I serve in Haiti!
Thank you for all your support! I feel extremely blessed to start this journey!
